Adjusted to the COVID19 pandemic, the 11th YOUMARES (YOUng MArine RESearchers) conference took place on the Cap San Diego Museum Ship in Hamburg from 13th – 16th of October 2020 as a hybrid event. Complying with all Corona health and safety regulations, the organization team together with the German Society for Marine Research (DGM) has done a tremendous job in setting up a small physical event complimented by streaming interactive sessions online.

According to the motto “Joining Forces”, young scientists had the opportunity to engage physically as well as virtually in open dialogues about diverse topics in marine science.

Next to inspiring scientific presentations, national and international Bachelor, Master and PhD students had the opportunity to learn more about career perspectives in the marine industry at the WTW Evening “Science meets Economy”. Eva Strothotte and Maria Jaeger of the German Pilot, did not hesitate, when asked to present the UNITED project at this interdisciplinary hotspot.

“Especially the online chat vividly reflected the young scientists’ interest in multi-use and we received many questions about how students could join the UNITED project, to conduct bachelors, master and PhD studies”, Eva happily reported.

"All in all, the conference delighted not only with challenging talks about the status quo of marine research in a professional atmosphere, but also made us  forget about COVID19 for a couple of hours."
